Research supports that chiropractic care throughout pregnancy can greatly improve labor and delivery for both mom and baby.  Regular chiropractic adjustments during pregnancy may be able to allow shorter labor, decreased pain and decreased chance of unnecessary C-Section.  It amazes me that more moms-to-be are not only unaware of these benefits, but many do not even know it is safe to see a chiropractor while they are expecting.  With these evidence-based benefits why wouldn’t you go, and go often?!

Shorter Labor

By keeping the pelvis adjusted and free of subluxations (joint restrictions) the pelvis is able to open easier for delivery.  According to Dr. Fallon’s study, The Effect of Chiropractic Treatment on Pregnancy and Labor, presented to The World Federation of Chiropractic, regular adjustments may help reduce labor times.  The study found that first time moms under regular chiropractic care experienced 24% shorter labor times!  Second and Third time moms enjoyed 39% shorter labors!  When you think about the average first time mom’s labor lasting 16hrs that is a significant amount of time.

Reduced Labor Pain

As discussed above, by keeping the pelvis, as well as the spine, free from subluxations a woman’s body is able to function more effectively without restrictions.  Women who undergo regular chiropractic care often report little to no “back labor”.  During an expert testimony by Dr. Freitag MD, PhD, he stated that the use of pain medication was reduced up to 50% by women who had received chiropractic care throughout their pregnancy.

Ideal Fetal Position

By keeping the pelvis, muscles and ligaments balanced through a protocol developed by Dr. Larry Webster, know as the Webster Technique, we are able to encourage baby to assume a head down position (Dr. Pistolese. The Webster Technique: a Chiropractic technique with Obstetric Implications).  If the instance of breech presentation is reduced the likelihood of cesarean delivery is also diminished.

I have yet to meet a pregnant woman who is planning a vaginal delivery who would not want to shorten her labor, reduce her chances of an undesired C-Section, all while experiencing less pain.  While prenatal care is a covered subject in chiropractic, I would encourage anyone who is pregnant to seek out a chiropractor who has undergone additional training on the subject.  There are many additional benefits to being adjusted throughout pregnancy, including reducing nausea, improving sleep and relieving neck and back pain!

At Express Chiropractic Fort Worth Dr. Stacy is Webster Technique certified and has attended additional training in Prenatal and Pediatric Chiropractic care through the International Pediatric Chiropractic Association (ICPA).  Express is dedicated to making wellness chiropractic care both affordable and accessible to our community.
